Project Detail

The Sinan Erdem Dome (Turkish: Sinan Erdem Spor Salonu), formerly known as the Ataköy Dome, is a multi-purpose indoor arena that is located in Ataköy, Bakırköy, Istanbul on the European side of Istanbul, Turkey.

It has a seating capacity of 22,500 for concerts. For the sport of basketball, it has a seating capacity of 16,000, and for the sport of tennis, it has a seating capacity of 16,457 people, making it Turkey’s largest multi-purpose indoor venue, and the third-largest in Europe (although it is not the third-largest in Europe incapacity for basketball use). The arena is named after Sinan Erdem (1927–2003), who was the President of the Turkish Olympic Committee, from 1989, until his death in 2003.

Steel roof structure in a spherical shell form, spanning 112 x 154 meters plan dimensions and with two planar faces at each side overall forms a shuttle-like geometry. Main loadbearing supports are 6 reinforced concrete twin columns with an r/c support mass which holds the tail section of the roof form. The Head section of the roof is fixed to the existing structure.

Steel trusses have fix supports on top of twin columns. Top and bottom chords are made up of circular hollow sections which forms a triangular shape. Three main trusses and secondary circular girders resting on them build up the skeleton while trapezoidal steel sheet covers and completes the roof system. Steel roof and its supports are separate from tribune structure constituting an independent structure by itself.

Reinforced concrete columns are in 2000x3500mm dimensions. Side columns have 18.26m rise while middle columns have 23.5m. R/C twin columns are 800mm in diameter and 25 meters in height resting on 2 meters thick pile cap and 30 piles underneath which have 130 tons of gross loadbearing capacity.

Cover sheet spans 5m in length. Secondary girders are circular hollow members that are 1016mm in diameter. Side bracing with cross members plays the in-plane stability role. Main truss is in triangular form where two top chord members have 4500mm distance and two bottom chord members have 600mm distance in between. This innovative design overcomes the lateral buckling problem.

Scoreboard load (6 tons) at the mid-span is also taken into account with other challenging load cases. ±30 degrees Celsius temperature load is considered. Structural ductility is classified as ordinary so strength modification factor R is taken as 5. The base shear ratio is taken as 0.25 and newly designed columns are assessed as high ductility moment resisting frames.
